“The American Association for the Advancement of 24小时娱乐在线 (AAAS) today announced that its Section on Chemistry has voted not to move forward with the nomination of Patrick Harran as a Fellow, following re-review of his nomination,” AAAS announced 22 December in a press release.
As we reported last week, widespread criticism followed the 16 November announcement that among this year’s 347 new fellows would be Harran, a University of California, Los Angeles, chemistry professor who faced felony charges for safety violations leading to the 2009 death of 23-year-old Sheharbano “Sheri” Sangji, a research assistant working in his lab. Harran is the first American faculty member ever indicted for lab safety violations. On 14 December, AAAS announced that its Chemistry Section, which had originally put forward the nomination, requested permission to reconsider its decision.
Today’s release also states that “[t]he AAAS Council Subcommittee on Fellows, which is empowered to review the nomination and election process, is also considering changes to the Fellow review process for subsequent nominations.”
